Welcome Address of Aruneshwar Gupta, Hony. Secretary
Hon'ble Mr. Justice J.S.Verma, Shri A.K.Sen, Sr.Advocate, Shri Kapil Sibal, President, Supreme Court Bar Association, Shri R.Mohan, Senior Executive Member, Supreme Court Bar Association and friends.
I warmly welcome you all on this third session of the 'Meet a Lawman Series'. The objective of the series, which in fact it has been able to achieve, is percolation of ideas to harness us to become better professional. This series is enabling us to realise the uphill route to success in this profession. This series is also providing us insight into the feelings and thoughts of the leading personalities in our profession, who have reached great heights by recognizing and manifesting independence of spirit and a very deep sense of dedication to the cause of justice.
Every person has an integrity, a quality of character and when he observes it, whatever he does, turns out to be well in the end. The integrity makes him the sort of man he is and helps people to repose trust in the innate goodness and virtuosity of all men. These people are able to make a clear face of the situations and maintain serenity and poise even in the most exacting crises.
Justice Holmes in his speech delivered at Harvard University on 'The Profession of Law', said :-
"The law is the calling of thinkers... If your subject is law, the roads are plain to anthropology, the science of man, to political economy, the theory of legislation, ethics and thus by several paths to your final view of life...To be master of any branch of knowledge, you must master those which lie next to it and thus to know anything you must know all.... No result is easy which is worth having. Your education begins when what is called your education is over ...Only when you have worked alone.... and in hope and in despair have trusted to your own unshaken will then only will you have achieved. Thus, only can you gain the secret isolated joy of the thinker, who knows that, a hundred year after he is dead,... man who never heard of him will be moving to the measurer of his thought..., which to his prophetic vision is more real than that which commands and army".
I welcome you all to make best use of the wide experiences expressed here, by those who have relentlessly contributed for more than four decades, to make the life of man on this diminishing earth more secure and more tolerable by making available, Justice for all.
